Thing to do in Ho Chi Minh City

See the top landmarks

Stroll along Đồng Khởi Street to discover some of Ho Chi Minh City’s iconic landmarks, such as the Notre Dame Cathedral, the Central Post Office, and the Saigon Opera House. For a more local experience, be sure to visit Bến Thành Market and the Jade Emperor Pagoda, both offering a unique glimpse into the city’s culture and history.

Shop small boutiques

In District 1, many old apartments and former office buildings have been transformed into vibrant shopping centers. Iconic, decades-old buildings like 22 Lý Tự Trọng and 42 Nguyễn Huệ are now home to a variety of intriguing stores, offering a unique mix of modern retail and historic charm.

Explore the Chinese Quarter

Chợ Lớn, the Chinese neighborhood, is perfect for exploring on foot. Make your way to Bình Tây Market, a massive wholesale trading hub, and visit Thiên Hậu Pagoda, a serene temple dedicated to the goddess of the sea, offering a peaceful escape with its rich history and atmosphere.

Hop on a motorcycle

Experience the city like a local by hopping on the back of a motorbike to explore its streets and feel the vibrant energy. Motorbike tours are especially charming in the evening, when the city is at its most romantic, and the sidewalks come alive with vendors selling delicious street food.

Eat street food

In Ho Chi Minh City, locals often gather around dented metal tables for unforgettable roadside feasts. Be sure to try local favorites like bánh mì (Vietnamese sandwich), bánh xèo (southern-style savory pancakes), and cơm tấm (broken rice), all of which offer a true taste of the city’s vibrant food scene.

Top thing to do in Mui Ne

White Sand Dunes, Mui Ne

The White Sand Dunes, located about 25 kilometers northeast of Mui Ne, are one of the area’s most popular attractions. Who would have imagined that Vietnam is home to such stunning sand dunes?

While the white sand dunes aren’t completely snow-white, they are noticeably lighter than typical sand dunes. What makes them particularly captivating is how they gently slope down to a tranquil lotus lake, surrounded by lush greenery—creating a breathtaking and peaceful contrast.

Quad Biking the White Dunes

Visiting the White Sand Dunes is free, and you can walk through them, though if you’ve ever tried walking up a sand dune, you know it can be quite a workout. However, there’s a small snack bar near the entrance where you can rent quad bikes. For about $30 an hour, you can race up and down the dunes, kicking up clouds of white sand along the way—it’s a thrilling experience. The wind can pick up on the dunes, and I almost didn’t take my DSLR out, but the cloud formations that day were so stunning, I decided to capture the moment.

Red Sand  Dunes, Mui Ne

The Red Sand Dunes are about a 20-minute drive from Mui Ne town. As soon as we reached the top, a group of kids rushed over, offering plastic surf mats, but I was content to stay on my feet that day. The sand here is much coarser than the white dunes and makes a squeaky sound as you climb to the top. While the red dunes may not be as striking as the white dunes, they offer beautiful views of the ocean. I can imagine that the sunsets here must be truly spectacular. There is no charge to visit the Red Dunes.

Mui Ne Fishing Village

Our third stop was at Mui Ne Fishing Village. We pulled up by the bustling main road, and Hau even stopped the traffic for us to cross! We then descended a steep concrete slope with steps leading down to the sea, where a small beach was scattered with piles of empty scallop shells. Each morning, the night’s catch is brought in and sorted right on the beach.

The brightly colored boats stretch across the water, with locals sitting in them, mending their nets and gear. You’ll also see many small round basket boats, a common sight throughout Vietnam, including some of the original bamboo woven boats. Today, most of these boats are made from colorful fiberglass. Fishing remains one of the main industries here, and the seafood in Mui Ne is truly impressive.
