Ha Noi

Founded over a thousand years ago, Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam and one of the country’s most historically rich cities. The Old Quarter, dating back to the 14th century, is a maze of narrow lanes lined with colonial-era architecture, offering a glimpse into the past. Today, Hanoi blends its ancient history with modern life, featuring trendy cafes, art galleries, and world-class dining experiences. At night, the city comes alive with numerous entertainment options, from chic rooftop bars to bustling street corners filled with bia hơi (local beer).

Phong Nha National Park

Once a quiet village, Phong Nha is now a famous hub for adventure tourism, largely thanks to the discovery of some of the world’s largest caves. Located in Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park, this region is a sprawling network of limestone mountains, caves, and vibrant ecosystems. Phong Nha village, situated along the scenic Son River, is the perfect gateway to explore the park’s wonders, including both colossal caves and diverse wildlife. The park also has a rich cultural aspect, with ethnic minorities calling it home.

Things to do in Phong Nha
  1. Join a Cave Expedition:
Phong Nha is famous for its caves, with over 300 to explore. Hang Nước Nứt is perfect for camping beneath limestone cliffs, while Hang Én features a massive main chamber with sparkling turquoise pools. For the ultimate adventure, visit Hang Sơn Đoòng, the world’s largest cave, which can accommodate skyscrapers and even contains its own jungle ecosystem. Tours to Hang Sơn Đoòng take 4-6 days.
  2. Go in Search of Wildlife:
Take Hai’s Eco Conservation Tour, a guided trek where you’ll explore the Wildlife Rescue Centre, encounter local species, and visit the stunning Thác Gió Falls for a refreshing swim.
  3. Explore Bồng Lai Valley:
Rent a bike and cycle through Bồng Lai Village, where you can enjoy a meal at the Pub With Cold Beer, famous for its grilled chicken with homemade peanut sauce. Afterward, head to Wild Boar Eco Farm for scenic views and relaxation.
  4. Walk the Eco-Trail:
The Nuoc Mooc Eco Trail is a peaceful pathway through Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park, complete with wooden walkways leading to tropical forests and crystal-clear streams. Perfect for a day of outdoor exploration.
  5. See the Big One:
For serious adventurers, Hang Sơn Đoòng is a must-see. This cave is the largest in the world, and its unique landscape is unlike anything you’ll find elsewhere.

  • Rainy Season: Expect heavy rains from October to December, often leading to floods.
  • Cold Weather: December to February brings cooler temperatures, so pack extra layers.

Phong Nha Transport:

  • By Train: Đồng Hới Train Station is the nearest railway station, accessible via the Reunification Express.
  • By Air: Đồng Hới also has an airport with direct flights from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
  • By Taxi or Car: From Đồng Hới, you can take a taxi to Phong Nha, which takes around 45 minutes.
  • By Bus: Budget buses are available from Hanoi, Huế, or Đà Nẵng to Phong Nha.
