Thing to do in Ho Chi Minh City
See the top landmarks
Take a stroll down Đồng Khởi Street to explore iconic landmarks like the Notre Dame Cathedral, the Central Post Office, and the Saigon Opera House. For a more local experience, don’t miss a visit to Bến Thành Market and the Jade Emperor Pagoda, both offering a glimpse into the city’s vibrant culture and history.
Shop small boutiques
In District 1, many old apartments and former office buildings have been transformed into shopping centers. Notable buildings like 22 Lý Tự Trọng and 42 Nguyễn Huệ are now home to a variety of unique and intriguing stores, adding a blend of history and modern commerce to the area.
Explore the Chinese Quarter
Chợ Lớn, the Chinese neighborhood, is perfect for a walking tour. Make your way to Bình Tây Market, a massive wholesale trading hub, and visit Thiên Hậu Pagoda, a charming temple dedicated to the goddess of the sea. The area offers a vibrant mix of history, culture, and local commerce.
Hop on a motorcycle
To experience the city like a local, hop on the back of a motorbike and explore the streets at ground level, soaking in the dynamic energy of Ho Chi Minh City. Evening motorbike tours are especially magical, as the city lights up and the sidewalk vendors come out in full force, creating a lively and romantic atmosphere.
Eat street food
In Ho Chi Minh City, locals enjoy gathering around dented metal tables for delicious roadside feasts. Be sure to try iconic dishes like bánh mì (Vietnamese sandwiches), bánh xèo (crispy, savory pancakes), and cơm tấm (broken rice with grilled pork). These street food staples are a must-try for an authentic taste of the city’s vibrant food culture.
Top thing to do in Mui Ne
White Sand Dunes, Mui Ne
One of the most popular attractions in Mui Ne is the sand dunes, located about 25 kilometers northeast of the town. Who would’ve guessed there are sand dunes in Vietnam?
The white sand dunes may not be completely snow-white, but they’re certainly lighter than typical sand dunes. Their charm lies in the striking contrast as they slope down to a lotus lake, surrounded by lush greenery, creating a stunning and peaceful landscape.
Quad Biking the White Dunes
Visiting the white dunes is free of charge, and you can explore them on foot. However, if you’ve ever walked up a sand dune, you know it can be quite a challenge. Fortunately, there’s a small snack bar at the entrance where you can rent quad bikes. For around $30 per hour, you can zip up and down the dunes, sending clouds of white sand flying as you go—definitely a fun experience! It can get windy on the dunes, and I almost didn’t take out my DSLR, but the cloud formations that day were so stunning, I couldn’t resist capturing the moment.
Red Sand Dunes, Mui Ne
The red sand dunes are located about a 20-minute drive from the town. As soon as we reached the top, a group of kids approached us offering plastic surf mats, but I was content to stay on my feet that day. The sand here is much coarser than at the white dunes, and it squeaked beneath our feet as we made our way to the top. While the red dunes may not be as striking as the white ones, the views out to the ocean are still beautiful. I imagine the sunsets here must be absolutely stunning. Best of all, there’s no fee to visit the red dunes.
Mui Ne Fishing Village
Our third stop was the Mui Ne fishing village. We parked by the busy main road, and Hau even stopped traffic to let us cross! There was a steep concrete slope with steps that led down to a small beach, littered with piles of empty scallop shells. The catch of the night is brought in early every morning and sorted right there on the shore.
The brightly colored boats stretched out across the water, and we saw locals in them mending nets and gear. The small round basket boats, a common sight throughout Vietnam, were everywhere, including some of the original bamboo-woven ones.
Today, most of these boats are made of colorful fiberglass. Fishing is a vital industry in this area, and the seafood in Mui Ne is truly remarkable.
