Thing to do in Ho Chi Minh City

See the top landmarks

Walking down Đồng Khởi Street is a great way to explore some of Ho Chi Minh City’s iconic landmarks. Start with the impressive Notre Dame Cathedral, an architectural gem, then head over to the Central Post Office, a beautiful colonial-era building. Nearby, you’ll find the Saigon Opera House, a stunning piece of French colonial architecture. For a more local experience, make sure to visit Bến Thành Market, a bustling hub of activity, and the Jade Emperor Pagoda, a serene and atmospheric temple.

Shop small boutiques

In District 1, you’ll find a unique blend of history and modernity. Many old apartments and former office buildings have been transformed into shopping centres, offering an intriguing mix of traditional architecture and contemporary retail spaces. Notable buildings like 22 Lý Tự Trọng and 42 Nguyễn Huệ are home to a variety of fascinating stores, where you can explore everything from fashion and accessories to local souvenirs, all while soaking in the charm of Ho Chi Minh City’s evolving urban landscape.

Explore the Chinese Quarter

Chợ Lớn, the vibrant Chinese neighborhood in Ho Chi Minh City, is an excellent area to explore on foot. Start your adventure at Bình Tây Market, a bustling wholesale trading hub where you can find a wide range of goods, from fresh produce to unique local products. Not far from there, visit Thiên Hậu Pagoda, a serene and atmospheric temple dedicated to Thiên Hậu, the goddess of the sea. The pagoda’s intricate architecture and peaceful ambiance offer a contrast to the energetic market surroundings, making this part of the city a fascinating blend of culture and commerce.

Hop on a motorcycle

To truly experience the pulse of Ho Chi Minh City, hop on the back of a motorbike, just like the locals do. This is an exciting way to see the city from street level, weaving through the bustling traffic and vibrant neighborhoods. The best time to do this is in the evening, when the city takes on a romantic atmosphere, with the lights twinkling and the air filled with the aroma of street food. As you cruise along, you’ll notice sidewalk vendors selling everything from snacks to souvenirs, giving you a real taste of local life. It’s an unforgettable way to immerse yourself in the energy of the city.

Eat street food

In Ho Chi Minh City, locals often gather around dented metal tables on the sidewalks, enjoying delicious roadside feasts. The city’s food culture is vibrant, and you won’t want to miss iconic dishes like bánh mì (a delicious Vietnamese sandwich filled with meats, veggies, and herbs), bánh xèo (crispy southern-style savory pancakes filled with shrimp, pork, and bean sprouts), and cơm tấm (broken rice served with grilled pork, eggs, and pickled vegetables). These simple yet flavorful dishes offer a real taste of local life and the perfect way to experience the city’s culinary scene.

Top thing to do in Mui Ne

White Sand Dunes, Mui Ne

One of the most popular attractions in Mui Ne is the Mui Ne Sand Dunes, located about 25 kilometers northeast of the town. These dunes are a surprising sight in Vietnam, as the country isn’t typically associated with desert landscapes.

While not pure snow-white, the white sand dunes are definitely lighter and brighter than most. The real charm of the area lies in the contrast between the vast, sweeping dunes and the lush greenery surrounding them. At the base of the dunes, a serene lotus lake adds a peaceful, natural touch, making it a beautiful spot for exploration and photography.

Quad Biking the White Dunes

Visiting the white sand dunes is free of charge, and you’re welcome to explore them on foot. However, if you’ve ever tried to climb a sand dune, you know it can be quite the challenge! For a bit more excitement, there’s a snack bar at the entrance where you can rent quad bikes. For about $30 per hour, you can race across the dunes, carving your way up and down while spraying sand in every direction. It’s an exhilarating experience!

The dunes can get quite windy, and at first, I hesitated to take out my DSLR camera because of the gusts. But when I saw the dramatic cloud formations that day, I decided to take the chance—and I’m so glad I did! The landscape was simply breathtaking.

Red Sand  Dunes, Mui Ne

The red sand dunes are located just a 20-minute drive from the town. As soon as we arrived at the top, a group of kids quickly approached us, eager to sell plastic surf mats. But I was content to simply enjoy the view and stay steady on my feet that day.

The sand here is much coarser than the white dunes and has a unique squeaky sound as we made our way up. While the red dunes may not be as striking as their white counterparts, they offer spectacular views of the ocean. I can only imagine how stunning the sunsets must be here.

Best of all, there’s no charge to visit the red dunes, making it an easy and beautiful stop on your trip.

Mui Ne Fishing Village

The third stop was at Mui Ne fishing village. We arrived at the bustling main road, and Hau even took the time to stop traffic so we could cross safely! At the edge of the road, there’s a steep concrete slope with steps leading down to the sea, where a small beach is littered with piles of empty scallop shells. Every morning, the night’s catch is brought ashore and sorted right there on the beach.

The view is stunning, with brightly coloured boats scattered across the water. You can spot locals sitting in the boats, diligently mending their nets and gear. The small round basket boats, which are a common sight in Vietnam, are plentiful here as well, including some of the original ones woven from bamboo.

Today, most of the boats are crafted from coloured fiberglass. Fishing remains one of the main industries in Mui Ne, and the seafood here is definitely worth sampling, showcasing the village’s vibrant fishing culture.
