Top thing to do in Mui Ne
White Sand Dunes, Mui Ne
The most famous attraction in Mui Ne is located about 25 kilometers northeast of the town: the Mui Ne sand dunes. Who would have guessed that Vietnam has sand dunes!
Although not perfectly white, the sand dunes are definitely lighter than your typical dune. What makes them unique is how they gently slope down to a serene lotus lake, surrounded by lush greenery, creating a stunning contrast.
Quad Biking the White Dunes
Visiting the white dunes is free, and you can walk through them at your leisure. However, as anyone who’s tried walking up a sand dune knows, it’s quite a challenge. At the entrance, there’s a small snack bar where you can rent quad bikes. For around $30 an hour, you can race up and down the dunes, kicking up clouds of white sand. It’s a thrilling experience! The winds can be strong on the dunes, and I almost didn’t take out my DSLR, but the cloud formations that day were too stunning to pass up, so I decided to capture the moment.
Red Sand Dunes, Mui Ne
The red sand dunes are located about 20 minutes from the town. As soon as we reached the top, a group of kids approached us offering plastic surf mats, but I was content to keep my balance that day. The sand here was coarser than the white dunes and made a squeaky sound as we made our way up. While the red dunes may not be as striking as the white ones, they offer beautiful views of the ocean. I can imagine the sunsets here must be breathtaking. Best of all, there’s no charge to visit the Red Dunes.
Mui Ne Fishing Village
Our third stop was at the Mui Ne fishing village. We arrived at the bustling main road, and Hau even stopped the traffic for us to cross! We walked down a steep concrete slope with steps leading to a small beach scattered with piles of empty scallop shells. The catch from the night before is unloaded early in the morning and sorted right on the beach.
The brightly coloured fishing boats stretch out across the water, and we could see locals working on them, mending their nets and gear. There were also many small, round basket boats, a common sight in Vietnam, with some made from traditional bamboo while most are now crafted from brightly coloured fiberglass.
Fishing is a key industry in Mui Ne, and the fresh seafood here is outstanding.
