Things to do in Sapa

Drive Ma Pi Leng Pass

Summit Mount Fansipan

A thrilling 6-kilometre cable car ride will take you up to the summit of Mount Fansipan, the highest peak in Indochina, in just 15 minutes. Once at the top, you can explore the serene pagoda complex before making your way to the summit itself. The last few steps lead to an unparalleled panoramic view, where the sprawling mountains, misty valleys, and lush landscapes unfold below. This awe-inspiring vantage point truly earns its title as the ‘Roof of Indochina,’ offering a breathtaking experience that’s hard to match anywhere else.

Visit an ethnic minority market

Every Sunday, Bac Ha market comes alive with vibrant energy as hundreds of traders from various ethnic groups, including the Dzao, Han, Xa Fang, Tay, and Thai tribes, gather to sell their goods. Dressed in their colorful traditional attire, they offer everything from fresh produce to handcrafted goods. The market is a feast for the senses, with the bustling atmosphere, lively haggling, and a riot of colors filling the air. It’s a perfect opportunity to experience the rich cultural diversity of northern Vietnam while enjoying the vibrant, energetic vibe of this unique market.

Go trekking in the hills

Sapa is renowned for some of Vietnam’s best trekking opportunities, offering scenic routes through stunning landscapes. Villages like Cat Cat and Ta Phin can be explored independently, allowing you to immerse yourself in the natural beauty and ethnic cultures of the area. For a more comprehensive experience, booking an overnight trek is a great option. You’ll trek through lush rice terraces, refresh in crystal-clear waterfalls, and engage with local communities to learn about their customs and traditions. This adventure offers a perfect blend of nature, culture, and personal discovery, making it a must for any trekking enthusiast.

Stay in a mountain lodge

For a more peaceful and authentic experience in Sapa, consider staying outside the main tourist hub at a mountaintop lodge or homestay. These accommodations offer simple yet comfortable surroundings, often nestled amidst the rice terraces. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to interact with local farmers as they tend to their fields, offering a unique insight into daily life in the region. Staying in such a setting allows you to immerse yourself fully in Sapa’s serene beauty and traditional culture, away from the crowds, and enjoy a genuine connection with the local community.

Get active

Mountain biking is a great way to get out and explore lesser-visited corners of Sapa. The annual Vietnam Mountain Marathon attracts some 4000 competitors who run buffalo-beaten trails ranging from 10 to 100 kilometres.
