Ha Long Bay
For many, the seascape of Ha Long Bay is synonymous with Vietnam. Cruises sail emerald green waters among thousands of rugged islands and islets, stopping at spectacular caves through which visitors can wander, viewing impressive, centuries-old formations. Ha Long Bay’s mystical beauty has made it a bucket list attraction within the country, but it’s still possible to find secluded corners to call your own.
Top things to do in Ha Long Bay
Cruise the bay
Nothing beats spending watching the sun set over the calm waters of Ha Long Bay, and waking up to a serene morning surrounded by karsts. Relaxing on a sun deck surrounded by magnificent panoramas is the highlight of many a trip.
Explore a floating village
Ha Long Bay is not just a UNESCO World Heritage site; it’s also home to unique fishing communities that have lived on the water for generations. A boat tour around one of these floating villages offers a fascinating glimpse into this rare and traditional way of life. As you glide through the calm waters, you’ll pass by stilt houses, floating markets, and fishermen going about their daily routines. The lifestyle here is deeply connected to the rhythms of the bay, and it’s a remarkable way to witness how people have adapted to this stunning, yet challenging, environment for centuries.
Paddle out in a kayak
Even if you’re not an experienced kayaker, navigating the serene waters of Ha Long Bay is a must-do. The calm lagoons and fishing boats are especially peaceful just before sunset, offering a chance to appreciate the quiet beauty of the bay. As the sun dips below the horizon, the soft golden light enhances the natural wonders around you.
For a different kind of adventure, clambering into one of Ha Long’s caves is an incredible experience. Many of the bay’s ancient karsts have been shaped by rain and water currents over thousands of years, creating fascinating cave systems. Some caves are small and a bit of a squeeze, while others are vast and awe-inspiring. Exploring these geological wonders on foot allows you to witness the raw, untouched beauty of Ha Long from a completely different perspective.
Try your hand at rock climbing
For thrill-seekers and climbing enthusiasts, Ha Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay offer some exhilarating adventures. One of the most exciting activities gaining popularity is deep water soloing, where climbers scale limestone karsts without ropes, with the sea below providing a refreshing plunge if they fall. Butterfly Island, in particular, has become a hotspot for this activity, offering stunning cliffs and challenging routes amidst the bay’s breathtaking scenery. Whether you’re a seasoned climber or a beginner, the dramatic backdrop of Ha Long’s limestone peaks makes deep water soloing an unforgettable experience.
Ha Long Weather
Ha Long Bay enjoys a diverse climate throughout the year, offering something for every type of traveler. From September to November, the weather is generally cool with clear skies, making it an ideal time to explore the bay. The mist that rolls in from December to March adds a mystical quality to the landscape, creating a more serene and otherworldly atmosphere. April and May bring pleasant sunshine and a refreshing breeze, perfect for outdoor activities like kayaking and cruising. However, the monsoon season from June to August can make visits unpredictable, with heavy rains and storms potentially disrupting plans.
Ha Long Transport
Most visitors to Ha Long Bay opt for a packaged cruise, including transport to and from Hanoi. Independent travellers can take a bus to Ha Long City or Hai Phong and a taxi to the port. It’s also possible to charter a seaplane for a 4,5-hours ride direct from Noi Bai International Airport. Travelling Ha Long Bay is best by boat. Those looking for a bird’s-eye view can book a 15-minute seaplane ride over the bay. In Ha Long City you can hire a taxi to get around town.
From November 2021, Ha Long will open to an unlimited number of vaccinated tourists, who will be able to travel without quarantine requirements. Please check the current travel advisory for updates and application details.
