For many, the seascape of Ha Long Bay is the quintessential image of Vietnam. Cruises glide across its emerald green waters, winding through thousands of rugged islands and islets. Along the way, they stop at awe-inspiring caves, where visitors can explore ancient rock formations that have been shaped by centuries of natural forces. The bay’s mystical beauty has solidified its place as a must-see destination on many travelers’ lists. Despite its popularity, there are still secluded corners where you can escape the crowds and find peaceful spots to enjoy the breathtaking surroundings.
Top things to do in Ha Long Bay
Cruise the bay
Nothing compares to watching the sunset over the tranquil waters of Ha Long Bay, with its dramatic karsts silhouetted against the colorful sky. Waking up to a serene morning, surrounded by these majestic formations, is a truly magical experience. Many travelers find that relaxing on a sun deck, enveloped by the magnificent panoramas of the bay, is the highlight of their trip—an unforgettable moment of peace and natural beauty.
Explore a floating village
Ha Long Bay is not just a UNESCO-listed site, it’s also home to a number of fishing communities who have lived on the water for centuries. Take a boat tour around a floating village for a glimpse of this rare and beautiful way of life.
Paddle out in a kayak
Even if you’re new to kayaking, navigating the stunning waters of Ha Long Bay is a must-do. Just before sunset, the calm lagoons and the sight of fishing boats create a serene atmosphere perfect for a paddling adventure.
For those who love a bit of exploration, Ha Long’s karsts offer more than just scenic views. Beneath the rocky cliffs and lush jungles, many of these ancient formations have been shaped by the forces of rain and water currents over the centuries. Whether you’re squeezing through narrow passages or marveling at vast, open caves, these geological wonders are waiting to be discovered on foot.
Try your hand at rock climbing
There are countless routes in the bay to keep climbing junkies entertained. Deep water soloing is becoming increasingly popular in beautiful Ha Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay, especially on Butterfly Island.
